The Green Man is an enigmatic figure. A foliate face whose mysteries hail from ancient times. Through its many reinterpretations, it continues to invite reflection on our perception of and relationship with nature.
A symbol of rebirth, growth, and fertility, it represents the life that always finds its way. Perhaps it is also a reflection of a spiritual connection with the land—a longing for communion with the wild, our vital instincts, and the natural cycles.
Yet, rebirth implies death. A mother who fecundates the earth in a necessary truce, reminding us of Persephone’s descent into the underworld to sustain the fertility of the fields.
This impulse to reflect the "other side" of fertility led me to carve feminine features that emphasize this duality. Nestled among the oak leaves, you will find mushrooms, elderberries, wild roses, ivy, saffron, and heather flowers. These species were chosen for their autumnal splendor and for their meaningful presence during my time in Montseny.
I have named this piece The Green Spirit (El espíritu verde) to evoke a spiritual connection with nature that encompasses all its cycles, transcending a purely rational or anthropocentric perspective.
